Rome 2014: The pilgrimage for the canonisation ceremony was a wonderful experience. My thanks to Ann Mc Govern for organising the pilgrimage. The atmosphere in Rome was electric, with people from all over the world in attendance, especially many young people. They prayed, they sang, they gathered on the streets. Pope Francis highlighted Pope John XXIII’s docility to the Holy Spirit and Pope John Paul II’s love for the family.  There were many Polish people present as Pope John Paul II struck a deep chord in their lives. It was moving to see Pope Francis greet Pope Benedict Emeritus to loud applause from the people present. On Monday last Cardinal Sean Brady celebrated Mass for the Irish pilgrims in the Church of the Navicella (which was full) with a reception afterwards in the Irish College. It brought back fond memories of the five years I spent there as a student. Sadly there are only 8 Irish seminarians there for the whole country. The rector of the Irish College, Mgr. Ciaran O’Carroll appealed to us to pray and encourage priestly vocations. I also got the opportunity to visit San Giovanni Rotondo and to once again observe large groups of people (many young families) pass by the body of Padre Pio. What an incredible saint and someone very dear to Irish people. While in our own country at times, there can be apathy in regard to the faith, it is only when you go on pilgrimage to other countries that you observe the beauty and strength of our Catholic faith. The parish was remembered in prayer. I thank the pilgrims in our group who made the journey  to Rome. (Fr. Kelly).

Congratulations and best wishes to Maurice Gilleece and his wife Aisling. They were married on Saturday 3rd May in Holywell.
